Southern History Logo

SHS LogoThe Southern History logo is inspired by the masthead of early issues of the Sherborne Mercury or Weekly Advertiser (founded in 1737 by William Bettinson) and the Western Flying Post or Yeovil Mercury (founded in 1744 by Robert Goadby who united the two newspapers in 1749) which featured an image of a mounted postman announcing the arrival of the newspaper by sounding his horn.

As an early provincial newspaper with a circulation across the entire south-western peninsula, the use of the logo by the Southern History Society represents the distribution of and the market for the written word across southern England.

The logo has been designed by Dominic Drabik and Laurence Belbin.
