The programme for quite possibly the most eagerly awaited event of 2023 has finally been announced!
Featuring papers by Craig Lambert (University of Southampton), Elaine Murphy (University of Plymouth), Kevin Linch (University of Leeds), Gary Baker (University of Southampton), Di Budden (University of Winchester), William Hoade (independent scholar), Tom Watson (University of Winchester; Bournemouth University), and Lisa Wojahn (University of Exeter), the 2023 Southern History Society Conference will investigate all aspects of the experience of garrison towns in Southern England.
Held at the University of Winchester on Saturday 4th November 2023, the conference will include papers on the transformational impact of garrisons on the south of England in the late 18th and early 19th-centuries; the Kentish Device Forts, c.1540-1640; shipping, seaborne trade and maritime communities of Kent, Hampshire and Dorset, c. 1350-1600; approaches to medical care in Henry VIII’s army by sea; Hanoverian and Hessian troop camps in southern England in 1756; Royal Navy officers’ wives and their interactions with community in 19th-century southern England; and women and the navy in southern port towns in 17th-century England.
